Session 7 (September 24)

1.      Ablation: /ˌæbˈleɪ.ʃən/ Noun.

A medical treatment that involves cutting away a small amount of tissue from the body.

E.g. My father was treated with a catheter ablation to control his problem.

2.      Compelling: /kəmˈpel.ɪŋ/ Adjective.

If a reason, argument, etc. is compelling, it makes you believe it or accept it because it is so strong.

E.g. He presented a compelling speech about medicine.

3.      Eczema:/ˈek.sə.mə/ Noun.

A skin condition in which areas of the skin become red, rough, and sore and make you want to rub them.

E.g. The student came to the school with signs of eczema.

4.      Harvest: /ˈhɑːr.vəst/ Noun.

The time of year when crops are cut and collected from the fields, or the activity of cutting and collecting them, or the crops that are cut and collected.

E.g. The harvest is coming, and the workers are preparing for it.

5.      Mild: /maɪld/ Adjective.

Mild weather is not very cold or not as cold as usual.

E.g. This exotic fruit needs mild weather to grow.

6.      Monoclonal: /ˌmɑː.nəˈkloʊ.nəl/ Adjective.

Relating to a group of cells that originally come from a single cell.

E.g. Monoclonal antibodies are helping these days to control many illnesses.

7.      Overwhelmed: /ˌoʊ·vərˈhwelm/ Verb.

To be too much to deal with.

E.g. Many critical patients overwhelmed the hospital.

8.      Placebo: /pləˈsiː.boʊ/ Noun.

A substance given to someone who is told that it is a particular medicine, either to make that person feel as if they are getting better or to compare the effect of the particular medicine when given to others.

E.g. The doctor gives her a placebo to control the pain.

9.      Rack: /ræk/ Noun.

A frame or shelf, often formed of bars, that is used to hold things.

E.g. We need to buy a plate rack to put the ones that my friend gave me.

10.  Saliva: /səˈlaɪ.və/ Noun.

The liquid produced in your mouth to keep the mouth wet and to help to prepare food to be digested.

E.g. It is disgusting for some people to throw away saliva in front of others.

11.  Screwdriver: /ˈskruːˌdraɪ.vɚ/ Noun.

A tool for turning screws, consisting of a handle joined to a metal rod shaped at one end to fit in the cut in the top of the screw.

E.g. My grandfather has a special screwdriver to work.

12.  Stigma: /ˈstɪɡ.mə/ Noun.

A strong feeling of disapproval that most people in a society have about something, especially when this is unfair.

E.g. The world needs to erase many kinds of stigma.

13.  Stroke:/stroʊk/ Noun.

A sudden change in the blood supply to a part of the brain, sometimes causing a loss of the ability to move particular parts of the body.

E.g. You need to take care of yourself because you can have a stroke.

14.  Suntan: /ˈsʌn.tæn/ Noun.

Pleasantly brown skin caused by being in hot sun.

E.g. My friend is trying to get a deep suntan skin.

15.  Uncertain: /ʌnˈsɝː.tən/ Adjective.

Not knowing what to do or believe, or not able to decide about something.

E.g. Alex is uncertain about getting involved in academic terms in a university.
